Goodnight!
Noted astronomer Dr. Carl Sagan discovered that a shooting star is not a star at all, but that they are meteors made of rock and iron which burn up as they enter the earth’s atmosphere. In a way it’s comforting to know that the stars are not actually falling from their orbits and descending every night through space like bright and beautiful suns who have lost their way and surrendered to the pull of some distant force. The idea that rock and iron fragments – travelers from distant galaxies report their arrival in so beautiful a way for us as they enter the outer reaches of our atmosphere.
Sagan also said “We make our world significant by the courage of our questions and by the depth of our answers.” And like the will to follow the trajectory of a shooting star itself, we are prepared for what answers we can discover. What begins as something romantic and fantastic is revealed as a simple rock which ignited as it entered our atmosphere. At first this is a discouraging discovery, but this gives way to the broad expanse of space, and allows us to dream even more deeply about space itself, and where this rock came from, plot the possible meteors they came from, consider meteors themselves, and look as deeply between the stars as possible. The more bravely we look, despite our fears and doubts, the more beautiful and wide open the possibilities.
After a very busy week, and emotionally difficult weekend, I wanted to build a bonfire for you, the biggest I could forge and launch myself up into the space just beyond our atmosphere – hovering there to look over our shoulders at the earth, and to gaze with awe and wonder at the stars around our galaxy. Then ever so slowly I wanted to give myself completely to the inevitable gravity of home, and experience the call of our planet, and surrender, and fall. An ambitious musical undertaking, but I strapped on my cosmic helmet, and adjusted my goggles, and hovered and fell, climbed up from my crater, lost my memory, and stood my ground. In another full four hour set, we journeyed from the shores to the stars and back again.
