  3. Sunshine:

In his debut publication, Allen Ginsburg wrote “They jumped off the roof! to solitude! waving! carrying flowers! Down to the river! into the street!” I have read HOWL at several periods in my life, and recently I revisited this magnificent work with a completely new set of eyes. In the last year or two I have been working to hold my own heart – to take responsibility for how I feel, and all of my love. I reach, intuitively, for shame, guilt, depression, skepticism, cynicism, and occasionally grab the wooden mallet and antique iron nails. These techniques have been admittedly entertaining, and endlessly engaging, but simply said they just don’t work.

And yet my heart shines. I ache for the breeze, and am moved to tears by simple things. I love this world with such tenderness, and find myself so sensitive and vulnerable most of the time that I feel a tool of some kind is required. A technique, or a practice if only to prevent me from following “the best minds of my generation” off the roof, down to the river, and into the street.

So bravely, and without the customary apologies I raise my hands to my own heart, and I will not take them down. No matter how many times you kiss me. No matter how sweetly you speak to me. God only knows – at least the god that creates those mysterious balls of filth in the corners of my hardwood floors so quickly without my permission or noticing the process unfolding: So, the god who has left my eyes so nearsighted that I find the blurry world more beautiful and amazing than the one my eye doctor would like me to see – I never imagined I would be in celebration of any type of boundary. I have forged my life, art, politics, and spiritual practices based on stripping you of your barricades, boundaries, and all the bullshit which this terrified and loveless world would rather die than go without. And yet if I haven’t got my own hands on my own heart, then who does?

Good question. Well worth asking. I just can’t give you that much power again. You are not grown up enough yet to be trusted with my heart. I’m not going to leave you, and I want you to know that I love you, and I always will, but for the foreseeable future I have placed my hands on my own heart, and will revel in its radiant golden light. I can share. I will share. It is essentially my purpose in life. And god knows I am so tired of hearing about how tired you are, how exhausted you are, how sick you are, and how fat and ugly you think you are. I am done listening. I want you to smile at me, and whisper in my ear about philosophy, beauty, sex and art. But no matter how many times you kiss me, I will not take my hands off my heart.
