Sunday Soul – a previous version of the future – May 30th 2010

… an opportunity becomes a form of punishment
with all the promise of a "could" seeping into the floorboards of a "should"
and all our dreams of empire and treasure
fall away into this stillness…

  3. I remember sitting on the floor of my room as a kid listening to the radio with my eyes closed and almost bursting inside with anticipation for life to begin. I thought the year two thousand was forever away and dreamed of a million wonderful and amazing things. Now, ten years gone, I couldn’t even begin to account for myself. I imagine holding that young man in my arms, looking into his beautiful brown eyes and showing him all that we’ve done, all that we’ve loved, and all we have created. We still don’t have any flying cars, but so many amazing things have come into being. Dreaming of the future as a memory in the past is a curious juxtaposition of a life imagined and at once reflected upon … an opportunity becomes a form of punishment with all the promise of a “could” seeping into the floorboards of a “should” and all our dreams of empire and treasure fall away into this stillness… a love letter of sorts from the distance, a sweet word of calm whispering “I love you. I’m proud of you. Welcome home.”

The transmission was absolutely lovely. I spent the weekend in Southern California, playing for the Dream Garden posse on friday night in Santa Ana, and for the Siesta Posse with Spun in San Diego on Saturday. I returned to my treehouse and created a mosaic of sounds from the past which were, at the time, visions of the future. To be fair, I did play some current tracks, but for the most part I wanted to keep it minimal, and clear. I played a little faster than I typically do on Sundays (121 instead of 116) and I opened my heart to the sounds coming out of my turntable, CD player, and streaming off my hard drive smiling the whole time, remembering when the phone had a dial, there was no such thing as an answering machine, Nixon was president, and the future we live in was never going to happen at all.

The community was warm, the conversation was tender. We made a couple new friends, and celebrated each other kindly. I was absolutely exhausted after a long weekend away, so I came to play this mosaic, and then ended just a few minutes after the two hour mark. I like to play for at least three hours, but lately I’ve been out and about so much that by sunday night I am typically really trashed and need to get to sleep. I’m not complaining. I love this work, and I have really adored my travels lately. I love Sunday Soul, it is a life saving and inspiring endeavor for me. But I have to say that I’ve really loved seeing your faces lately. There’s absolutely nothing like bringing this kind of vulnerability into the real world, and sharing it with you face to face.

Thank you so much for listening. I love you.
