Boss DR-55 Sample Rhythm Pattern Book

This little booklet came with the Boss DR-55 when it was new, and it nowhere to be found on the internet as a free resource for those of us who might be hoping to get some examples of how to learn to program rhythms in this unique method.

The DR-55 is not an X-O-X style interface, rather, it asks us to put the machine into WRITE mode, and then select the instrument we want to program (BD, SD, RS, ACC) and then, using the little red light as our ending guide, press START when we want a note, and STOP where we want a rest.

For example:
A 4 on the floor kick drum would be
Start º Stop • Stop • Stop • Start º Stop • Stop • Stop • Start º Stop • Stop • Stop • Start º Stop • Stop • Stop •
Notice in the booklet • the filled in circles are STOPS º and the open circles are STARTS.

With a brain like mine, this can be tricky somehow without making some notes, or having a good head for numbers (which I do not).

So this booklet is a handy training guide to help us understand the numbers of a rhythm pattern. Doing these patterns has helped me learn, and begin to build some muscle memory for the basic math of rhythm.

I’ve prepared this little booklet in two ways:

Booklet
1. As a printable duplicate of the original, intended for black and white, double sided printing, and then cut and folded into a little replica of the original on 8.5 x 11 regular paper.

Pictures
2. As a folder of Jpg files of the 12 pages of this booklet.
