  3. Sunshine:

There is a lot to say about love. It’s nothing I’m actually going to endeavor to write down here, but suffice to say that I hope I said everything I have to say as well as I can in the selection, the mixing, layering, and singing and speaking in last night’s transmission of Sunday Soul. Love is the most common theme I choose for this program – from love to lust, I express my devotion, admiration, attraction, heartbreak, optimism, fear, hope, and endless passion for music, ideas, textures, hearts and minds. Over the last seven years I have tried in my way to simply be the love that’s so brutally absent from this world. I’ve selected quiet anthems, and whispered audacious things about what I want to do to your body. I have sang my heart out, and talked my head off. I have told you more than once that I don’t know you well enough to “fuck” you, but that if you want to spend some time looking into my eyes, and feel the warmth of your own fears and desires shining back at you, then we can make a start. I have cheered for our progress, held you through heartbreak, and insisted over and over that love isn’t anything you’re going to get, but it’s something we’re all going to have to do.

delight in the light of love brings us to the end of 2011. For the first time in a very long time it is a year’s closing which I am not exhausted, a little angry, and so glad to see it go. I had a very good year. This year I got back to work. I (very very nearly) completed two album, resolved long standing debts, amended ancients errors, grew substantially, found a voice for this nagging music in my heart which has gone silent for much too long, asked for help, learned to let love in a little better, learned to take a minute for myself, asked good questions and didn’t get angry that there were no easy answers, I traveled far and wide and can only think of one “bad” show, I was more patient, more gentle, more loving, and more devoted to my community than ever. Last year I left 2010 behind more than 5 months behind in my rent, and was living in a state of terror and stress so deep that the alopecia on the back of my head looked like someone had punk’d me at a party. This year I am nearly caught up, I have food in the cupboards, ideas and plans, hope in my heart, and the mark of stress on the back of my head is a mere dot or two. I’ve got bookings into june of next year. I’ve got an album to license, collaborations in process and planned, work to do, and energy to undertake them. It may sound like a small transition to you, but for me, the stubborn one, the man who does what he does, loves what he does, and would rather die than surrender or give in to the constantly nagging internal voice which says “give up,’ this is huge progress. I am encouraged and empowered by all of the beautiful and amazing music that just keeps flowing, and more and more I feel that I am absolutely free to be myself, and to express myself with you. I may be a fool, but I am becoming a very happy and productive fool.

I want to thank you for listening. Thank you for joining me in this journey to delight in the light of love together. Your encouragement, your words, your time, your ear, your movement, your hearts simply mean the world to me. It’s why I’m here, and I couldn’t be more grateful. Thank you.

May the stars above you shimmer and shine. Guiding your heart from wherever you are, all the way home. Delighting your mind, and sparkling in your eyes. And may all your sundays have soul.
