Tonight in DC

category:

sunshine_dc.jpgI’m off this morning to Washington DC. I’m playing tonight at Club Five. I’ve got over eight hours of music prepared, my mic, my mixer, and my delay pedal. It’s only 2am and I really thought I’d be up all night working it out and then end up only sleeping on the airplane. Looks like I can go to bed early and get some much needed rest.

My flight leaves SF at 9:30 and I land in DC at 5:30. Some folks were talking about possibly getting together for a meal beforehand. I’ll text everyone I have mobile numbers for when I land and we can get together from there. Unlike my recent mad dashes in and out of the east coast, I’m staying through until monday afternoon so there’ll even be time to grab breakfast after if you want to.

So far only one person, a treasured starving student, has asked for guest list. That makes me happy. Looks like everyone’s doing well for themselves. So I’ll be there, all night, getting it together. Out of the 8 hours I am prepared to play, I’m sure it’ll end up being 4-5 hours. 2 of those hours are my material and some dubtribe classics for you (by request for Tim’s birthday.) So it should be a beautiful blend of the past, and the hybrid of deepness, techno and soul I’ve really been working hard on over the last year.

So looking forward to tonight! See you soon, or if not, then when I get back.

love,
s.

  1. I arrived safe and sound. The flight was deeply turbulent. There’s a huge system between the gulf of Mexico extending up into Canada which casued our flight to drop and struggle for about half the trip. Hairy.

Tim met me at the airport and we had a nice time laughing on the way back to DC. I’m checked into the hotel now (did you know that Washington DC is a non smoking city? No smoking rooms in hotels, no place you can smoke apart from the street. I am currently smoking a cigarette in my room. I wonder if I’ll light the building on fire?)

In a continuing trend, I was sent to room 307 where I met a nice man and his rollaway bed watching television. A quick trip back to the lobby and I’m safe as houses in my own room. Wonder who I’ll meet tonight?

I’ve got dinner plans with a group of friends and a growing guest list for tonight. I’m on at midnight, and play until 5 or maybe later if they let me.

Stoked to be here and playing tonight!

  2. Well that was a lot of fun!

I met up with Don, Kelly and Simone for dinner. We had some yummy Malaysian food (dark curry broth with noodles and vegetables) and then headed over to the club (after a stop at Cosi for a coffee) and found Hannick thumping the tunes at Club Five. There was some kind of fashion show going on, and it was super weird. It took me a little while to set up my equipment, but everything came together, and worked out just fine.

I challenged the crowd, and they underook it. I loved it.

One thing I notice is that when I bust out the dubtribe songs, or go off on a tirade of some kind it’s just not the same as when Dubtribe played. Something about that kind of delay and discussion during a set seems better left to the memory and history of my previous version. As a DJ, where I feel most adept, and connected to the music and the dancer is when I am in the mix, and singing.

I’m going to let go of some of these old songs, and sing more, speak less, and do what I can to develop new paths toward collecting open hearts on the dance floor.

During the set it felt strange to come to this realization, but today, after some sleep, it feels good, liberating even, to let go.

Michael and I went for breakfast and talked everything over. It’s always a pleasure to see him. I really love what I do, and appreciate my freinds deeply. I sure hope it shows. I sure hope you know how much I love you.

All in, a wonderful night, beautiful music, and a pleasure.

    : )

just getting in now. 4:00pm. i got confused walking around d.c. looking for chinatown (where was don with his street explanation when i needed him) and missed the 8:00 bus. ha! no biggy. i sat in starbucks and talked to strangers and just enjoyed the after party buzz.

    thank you sunshine, for everything.

  4. I love that there’s a bus which runs between Manhattan, Philly, and Washington DC connecting the Chinatowns of the eastern seaboard for $10.

    Magic!

is a CD from DC March 31 available?

  6. is a CD from DC March 31 available?

I don’t know for sure, but I don’t think that anyone recorded the set.
I’ll be sure to record it myself next time.

    sorry

  7. GUDA:

    Sunshine,

Thanks for the wonderful music over the weekend! It was so great to see you – I’m glad that we’ll be seeing you again around DC during the next few months. Next time you need to do your radio show in your hotel room, I will bring you speakers – I promise. (your radio show was smokin, even though you had no speakers)

    Stagg,
The numbered streets run north and south.
The lettered streets run east and west.
The streets named after states run diagonal and they will get a visitor lost. every time. avoid them until you get a chance to practice a little bit. We’ll try again in June.

    cheers!
    Don
