Bob called me up and said he’d managed to get a pair of tickets. They were announced and said to be going on sale at noon, by twelve o five they were completely sold out. Dave Chappelle was going to do another one of his impromptu stand up performances at the punch line, and we were going.
We met for dinner and then joined the line of people waiting to get in. We waited until about ten forty five when they finally began to let us in. Dave performed until two in the morning. What a mind, what a man. Nothing appeared to be prepared comedy, he told a joke, but it was in the middle of his diatribe about how he’s dope and he can write a joke backwards, mainly this was an emerging style of Dave’s where he appears to be talking with you, telling you something personal, getting philosophical, political, and then swings in a segue from earlier in the conversation, and starts picking on the couple in the audience, smoking american spirits, alternating with cloves. He was right on, and on time. Very funny, deeply engaging, and simply amazing.
Thanks Bob! And thank you Dave!
