maybe i have been in the UK too long now, but i find that music video disturbing and confusing.

it makes me wonder if people are caught up in a celeb obsession applied to obama. there is no denying that celeb culture has taken on a life of it’s own, and this just feels very wrong when it is applied to a decision as important as this one.

Maybe you have been in the UK too long. There is a lot to consider, and the process of reaching out from within the horrible din of the american landscape is gigantic task. It doesn’t surprise me that the grass roots support and affection surrounding Obama has been met with distrust, and skepticism.

After what we’ve been through it makes perfect sense. Frankly I feel that if we don’t get a single vote from here on out we have still been victorious, and accomplished the impossible. After the beating we’ve taken over the last 7 years you’d think we would just stay down, and keep quiet like Nancy Pelosi and all the other Democrats in the House and Senate (Barbara Boxer, Joe Bidon and a precious few other excluded.) You’d think we could see the beating we have coming with this one from a mile a way and just cover our heads and hope for the best. You’d think…

Just listen to what the man has to say. Examine his record. Look at his supporters, his comrades, his allies. Listen to his wife. That’s what I did. Frankly, as much as I feel skepticism and doubt, mistrust and fear with regards to the future of America, because it is so easy to give in to negativity, and not question where all this fear and doubt comes from. As much as I simply detest politicians, and capitalists, when I listen to Barack Obama speak all of that melts away and I believe him. But when I listen to Michelle Obama speak and I am leaping out of my chair in support of her husband.

    I want change.

Stevie Wonder called me the other day to remind me that he loves me, and hoped I was going to vote today. He reminded me that it was not too late, and that I could still vote today, right now. So I put on my jacket, and sandals and walked to my polling place and cast my vote.

    Did you vote?

sunshine, just because i live in the uk now does not mean i do not have a clue about the candidates. that is not the case at all.
i do know what obama has to say and where he stands on many issues, particularly the ones i find most important. and for the record, yes, i did vote. i’ve been voting since i left the states, although to be honest, i’m getting to the point where i just don’t want to encourage them!

i don’t actually have a problem with Obama. If he gets the democratic nomination I’ll be voting for him.
i didn’t say anything about his politics in my post.
what i have a problem with, and what i feel just a bit ‘icky’ about, is that ads like this insult my intelligence. they feel manufactured and designed to pull at my heartstrings. i don’t need scarlett johannsen singing to me about hope. it’s just plain weird.

feeling that ‘obamamania’ has a touch of desperation to it does not make me fearful or mistrustful.
what it makes me is judicious.
i think it’s brilliant that Obama makes you feel that hope.
god, what more could you ask for?
well, hope and not a batshit crazy president.

living out of the states have given me an insight on my country i would NEVER normally have. you just can’t have it unless you get out. so i do have an understanding of america (ns) that is probably hard to explain to you or anyone else who has never spent more than a holiday outside their culture.
it is very easy to get wrapped up in something exciting especially when the head of that organization is charismatic and has a great smile. jesus sunshine, you know yourself how obsessed people can get. i’ve talked to people that don’t know what obama is on about but they sure think he’s great!
and that is such an american thing! i’m sorry but it is.
so these sort of heart tugging ploys scare me. they make me fearful not of change or Obama himself, but of the mentality of americans and how easily they are led.
    jmho. :)

Well, having studied all of his albums, I have to disagree. He may not know me, but at the very least the man is capable of accessing a place of love which reaches me personally, and quite deeply.

    I’ll settle for that.

Count me in as one of the beleagured Americans who’ve grown discouraged and weary. I’ve got less fire than you for the political fight. But also count me in as a voter in the election, one with a pang of optimism kicking in again, imagining that Obama wins. To have a president that we can feel proud of again? Makes me feel like there is hope. I really want him to win.

Personally I love the video. (even though I am no fan of Scarlet Johannsen, by a long shot) Sadly, people in this country are awestruck by celeb cultue, and know more about it than they do about government, so it actually seems fitting to bring them into the picture, because people seem to pay attention to that.

What is the best way to reach people?

Aside from the video, I love what this man has to say. He seems very sincere, I hope he is. Quite honestly, he has already inspired a lot of change, and is. The thing I find so inspiring, is that the message is positive, and it includes us all. It says that we can get beyond limiting beliefs, and if we work together, than anything can be done.

(its funny, I was listening to Stevie Wonder today)

I was having a coffee on super tuesday, I had already voted and was celebrating in the sun. A lone young man came walking up the street with a sign he’d made by hand that simply said “Obama” on it.

When he arrived at the corner he turned to the people who were sitting outside in the sun and sang out “Obama… Yaaay!” and everyone cheered. We collected our things and followed him up the street shouting “Obama… Yaaay!” together.

It’s so nice to know I’m not alone.

I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but I get teary-eyed every time election coverage comes on the screen. I guess the way to my heart is through a really good stump speech.

The pragmatic part of me reminds me that in the larger scheme of things, it doesn’t really matter what the candidate says and all of the wonderful things they promise - case in point, the Bush 2000 campaign promised some really snazzy stuff, including some ideas I actually liked, but we all know what happened in the end.

My grandmother, who is 89 and has seen a fair share of elections, keeps a pretty steady demeanor in the midst of election fervor. She says that while it does matter the man (or woman) that you elect, it matters just as much if not more the people that the candidate surrounds his/herself with, the people that will then become cabinet ministers and prominent party leaders, etc, etc. Oh, and I’m not just talking about Oprah.
