An interesting show for me. I played two hours of source material, house music, nothing released after 1989. Adonis, Charles B, Frankie Knuckles, Mr. Fingers, Virgo, Gemini, Pal Joey, Joey Negro, CeCe Rogers, A Guy Caled Gerald, Jack Frost, Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk, Dreamhouse, Earth People, KCC, Slam, Bobby Konders, Jillian Mendez, Loose Joints, Earth People, Fingers Inc. and Las Americas. Music I haven’t pulled out to make a set out of in a very, very long time.

Brought me back to the little tiny clubs of the late 80’s in San Francisco, when it was hopeless, but cheap, and relatively easy to live.

The feeling of community was in the air, and people got together to dance to house music for the sake of being out of their apartments, together.

Back then there was a feeling of something happening which no one could really put their finger on. The younger people, white people, straight people were all arriving in the clubs in greater numbers. Some older people took us in and showed us about the music, that’s where we got heroes like Doc Martin. Some people felt threatened by the new diversity. For a while it seemed like between AIDS and heterophobia house was going to die, fall off the face of the earth without ever knowing that was Robert Owens singing, or it was DJ Blackstone spinning.

The rest is history, and the 90’s were a lot of fun, but there’s nothing like a completely unmixable 12″ single on Trax which sounds like it was left in the road for a month.

I may not have mixed these records together was well as a better DJ could have, but those falling basslines, the Joey Negro swing, the innocence of an acid attack, and the joy of a TR-707 compressed, eq’ed and forced onto a very flimsy piece of vinyl to make it sound like a TR-909 is perhaps the best sound in the whole wide world.

In celebration, and because I wasn’t tired, we late night discothequed into the night with a selection of tunes I love from this month and last month’s releases, plus I debuted my new re edit of Blacksoulsista by Valencia Robinson, and did some singing too. What fun!
