Speaking out about the way New Orleans is going to be rebuilt, Mayor Nagen said, “No matter what they want uptown, this city is going to be Chocolate.” He said this several times.
When asked what he meant exactly, Nagen said:
“Do you know anything about chocolate? I’m asking you… do you know about chocolate? You take some dark chocolate, you add some white milk, and you get a delicious drink.”
Now I admit I didn’t have access to the entire speech this man made, and if I did I would be very interested to hear the rest. But from what I heard and read I get the sense that, like all Democrats in the United States right now, Mayor Nagen is caught up in the exact reason why the Republicans, the large scale corporations, and the military industrial complex rule the world at the moment.
I believe that what Nagen was trying to say was this:
New Orleans is an integrated city, it has always been a melting pot of rich, poor, black, white, and everything in between. New Orleans is a beautiful city with history, culture, spirituality, and a passion for life that is unique, and rare in the world today.
The Government, in its finite and limited wisdom, are making every effort to plough down what were once poor neighborhoods with low property value, and use the tragedy which has demolished the lives of so many, to rebuild New Orleans as a theme park. This has been done in New York City, San Francisco, and is an emerging trend all across the country today. Government can not be effective, they say, without the money and infrastructure provided by big box retail, and illegally huge and inculcated infrastructure firms such as Bechtel and Haliburton.
I, as Mayor of the great city of New Orleans, will not allow this to happen here. Our history and our future rely on the people who have populated the landscape, the churches, the quarter, the balconies, the businesses, and the cemeteries of this city, and we will rebuild this city with our bare hands if we have to to honor and tribute the people of this great city and become, again, a home for them.
But what he said was “No matter what they want uptown, this city is going to be Chocolate.”
We have to do better.
