Getting organized…

I’ve coded a new theme for my journal. Originally I planned to have mastheads for each category, and an extensive organization (all of which I actually coded by hand) but then I discovered that using ajax as a page loader I could just load up the pages in the container of the front page without making you guys go loading and searching or wading through all my various rubbish to find what you might be interested in, or looking for.

Already I have changed my mind. Ha!
I doubled back and removed the ajax rubbish. Much as I love the inline page loading, I really feel that it takes so much fun away from the site itself. Seems like half the real beauty of a journal is the related posts, having access to your own comments, and being able to dig around and revel in all that a long standing site might have to offer.

I added a cleaner, single post look with the pages listed at the bottom. You can browse the recent entries all the way back to the beginning of time if you have the time, or you can use the navigation on the top to jump between subjects. This page, the main index will show the most recent post regardless of the category. There’s recent dialog in the sidebar, as well as another list of recent writing, and some other stuff.

I’m undecided about the lack of changes in the masthead, sidebars, and navigation… I like little subtle changes in content from section to section and that was kind of what the whole site’s revision was meant to be about, but over all I think it’s a lot cleaner and I am happy with my work. I am definitely relieved to be ever so slightly less bloggy (oooh i just hate that word. This is a web site… a journal… not a log.)

My bias and irritating specific use of certain words aside, the real question is…
how does it work?

Mess around, try to break it. I have no idea how it looks on a PC, a little screen, or how badly it all breaks when you have to size the text for the visually impaired. Does everyone have java enabled?

Please let me know how it works for you.

On PC, IE6, 1024 x 768, your sidebar is getting moved to the bottom. It doesn’t appear to be too wide, maybe you have a div “clear” in there somewhere? That’s all I got when it comes to troubleshooting CSS, you’re much better at that.

Other than that quirky IE6 thing, it looks lovely in my substandard browser! All your rollovers work nicely too.

    congrats!

wait a minute - does the index have a white background or a black one?

i’m having a hard time reading the text of the journal entries for the faintness of the gray text, in addition to the size. i tried highlighting the text to read it, but the contrast decreases instead of reversing. my age is clearly becoming an issue.

if you hit command (alt) and + the text will grow for you. but i changed the color to make it a little more contrasty for you too.
