Last Sunday night's transmission was such a playful surprise. I was just back from a quick and vicious trip to Chicago where Dubtribe played at the Green Dolphin, and had barely caught my breath when it was already time to consider how I was going to apply myself to that amazing poster I made. The inspiration comes from the delightfully bizarre Mr. Rob Brezsny. I'd been taking myself too seriously again and feeling a little defeated. Brezsny said "I suggest that you and I be as playful as dolphins." and I laughed out loud. The first thing I did was a little research. How playful are dolphins? What do they sound like? I found that Dolphins are wildly sexual, deeply playful, and almost as sentient and intelligent as human beings (a debatable statement, I know, on both sides of the argument) and they don't sound at all like the happy little chirps of flipper. Rather, dolphins sound like clacky little bits of sonar. It's not the cute little sound effect I had expected to find and include in the show. So instead of oceanic waves crashing and dolphins tittering, I decided that the challenge was for "you and I" to be "as playful as dolphins." That mean me. So I started rifling through my collection looking for play.

What happened was a welcome and lovely surprise. To my mind and heart this was the best sunday soul show in a very long time. Recently I asked you to book me, I did. After much too long thinking about it I've decided that I want to play. I don't want to sit in my studio killing myself over unfinished symphonies anymore, and more than that, I really don't want to pretend to be something I'm not any more. This business of arriving somewhere with a collection of tracks I hope to crap will make strangers dance, taking the turn out personally when I shouldn't be there in the first place, and feeling like a 6' 3" fish out of water all the time just isn't going to work. I need to open my heart wider, slow the tempo down to where I'm home, and express myself in the most honest possible way. Afterall, if what my heart is aching for is a community of people who can feel, hear, celebrate, and dance to the mosaics of my heart at 115 bpm, then I'd better be prepared to play them out loud for you when the opportunity arrives. And so, I dove into the ocean and began to swim...

It was beautiful, silly, playful, deep, loving, and really satisfying. The chat was present and focused. The experience was priceless and not to be missed. I played songs I honestly never expected to play - MARRS - Pump up the volume, Human League - Don't you want me baby - and while we began with clare de lune, and took it up to 118, we quickly settled into a seriously funky 115 meant to fuck up Matty's other leg, and carried on from there... words came and went, gentle singing, and sweet play. I loved it. It's where I'm at right now. I hope you feel it too. What a wonderful fucking show. Oh my stars I love you so... thank you for listening. See you next week!

Last Sunday night's broadcast was amazing. Simply a baad ass show. The best in a very long time for me. Wow. I made the flyer and then got very busy with other things. About an hour before show time on sunday I sat down to consider the theme - compartimento defumadores - and imagined trains, boxes, smoke, crowds, filth, desperation, relief, restrictions, frustration, civil liberties, health, fresh air, inner peace, and taking a ride to nowhere. Aside from my 120 bpm resyncopation of 'Ride Like The Wind' I was at a complete loss for what to play. So I sifted through my collection, hunting for friends, and family, anything which might give a clue to these train tracks, this ticket in my hand without a destination.

We began slowly, and were swiftly transported away. I was amazed in real time by the power of instinct, and inspiration. We journeyed from the likes of Grover Washington Jr. to Evelyn Champaign King, and along the way we made a deeper connection with Chateau Flight, Shit Robot, and Jimpster. I'm never sure of myself, apart from my devotion to electronic music, and the joy I take from making these digital mosaics every week, but something came over me as the train pulled out of the station and I let go. I was laughing, crying, dancing wildly, and words just kept flowing right out of me.

So moved, I expressed my dissertaion on time, and schedules. I pantsed the 'lovers of the world' and challenged us all to love harder, to be more honest, to do better. I described the first hand experience of sleeping all night in a smoking compartment, and then let out with a long, and personal expression of love itself. I tell you truly, I needed this show so badly. The muse came down and moved right through me.

Attendance started off in a record breaking fashion, the chat woke up slowly, and we were off on a journey. New friends, old friends, and the passing landscapes of places this train was not going to be stopping at. I boarded the train wondering why I was going, but knowing in my heart that I had to leave. And we arrived at our unknown destination transformed, exposed, and free.

Last Sunday night’s broadcast was amazing. Simply a baad ass show. The best in a very long time for me. Wow. I made the flyer and then got very busy with other things. About an hour before show time on sunday I sat down to consider the theme – compartimento defumadores – and imagined trains, boxes, smoke, crowds, filth, desperation, relief, restrictions, frustration, civil liberties, health, fresh air, inner peace, and taking a ride to nowhere. Aside from my 120 bpm resyncopation of ‘Ride Like The Wind’ I was at a complete loss for what to play.

I’m never sure of myself, apart from my devotion to electronic music, and the joy I take from making these digital mosaics every week, but something came over me as the train pulled out of the station and I let go. I was laughing, crying, dancing wildly, and words just kept flowing right out of me.

So moved, I expressed my dissertaion on time, and schedules. I pantsed the ‘lovers of the world’ and challenged us all to love harder, to be more honest, to do better.

Last sunday night's transmission was transformative for me. I planned this amazing show for you, really I did. I hand picked a load of Sunday Soul classics, and a few new tunes, as well as a few classics I've never played before. The idea was that I was going to close the ___________ with a _________ series of sunday soul trasmissions with a monument of some kind to possibility. The show, in my mind, was a love sonnet to you - the woman with a heart.

the week leading up to this broadcast was amazing, one of the best weeks of my life. I worked hard on the poster, and carefully plowed through my records and I thought I was ready. Valentine's day weekend arrived and it was absolutely sublime. Friday night was an adventure - a long walk, a long talk, dancing to Mark Farina's mushroom jazz under the freeway, and Saturday was even better - a picnic at the beach just in time for sunset after a long and difficult conversation with my father, and sunday was a day of healing, and bravery. I faced the day with a heart as wide open as I could and no matter how wide I opened myself, the challenges continued to come. By ten o'clock I was done, but it was time to play. So I cleared my mind, setting aside my expectations, and I began...

What was meant to be a monument felt like a closet full of ghosts. My records didn't sound like love songs to me anymore. My sweet words felt like ammunition and challenges. I wanted to brush my finget tips across you so lightly, and yet I felt my ham fisted hands bungling the task and dropping the moment in lieu of the last vestiges of resentment, memory, and the smudge of the past. I know the past is gone, never to return, and yet somehow all these things came out wrong and by the 2/3 mark of the four hour program I was disgusted with myself, bored of my whining, and sick of myself.

I paced my flat and opened my heart even wider. It hurt. There were a few tears, but with love and light I managed to find the threads of a path forward from here. I wanted to compose a monument for you, but what I found was a river for myself to walk into and lay down as flat as I could and allow my spirit to drift free. As an artist, I find there have rarely been more challenging times. As a man, I find there has never been a more insirational time. The burden is mine, and the work required is a gift. In 24 hours or less it's amazing to me how I can completely forget who I am, what I'm doing here, and discover that my grateful heart has slipped from my fingers again.

I want to thank you for spending some time beside me, for lending me your ear, and opening your heart with me. I am humbled and grateful, changed forever, and so loved. You, beautiful you, just by sharing your time and your life with me, has opened the world in a way beyond my wildest dreams. And so maybe my monumental plans are made of sand, and perhaps we can not return to retrace our footprints in the sands of time, but thankfully I find myself whole, beloved, and free in this moment now. The whole wide world stretches out in front of me. Whatever the future holds, bring it baby. My heart can hold so much more than I ever thought it could before. And as amazing as that is, the beautiful thing is that my only task is to occupy this beautiful moment, and just let go...

Last sunday's transmission was a little slice of heaven. It was the finale of DISCO WEEK at 90hz.org. We spent the week steeped in the discothéque and had a blast as a community dedicating ourselves to a theme, and I think everyone did a fantastic job. Turn out was superb, and participation was splendid. I absolutely loved seeing everyone get together around disco and share ther own deviant take on the most controversial, detestible, revolutionary, sexy, brutal, meaningless, and important musical style of the 20th century.

I found myself really looking through my records and asking myself "What the fuck is disco?" It's a silly question really. Last month I was sitting at the Jet Blue terminal of JFK waiting for my flight back to San Francisco when 'Stayin Alive' by the Bee Gees came onto the loudspeakers. Sitting there quietly I watched every adult in the terminal start to tap their toes, and nod their heads. Every single child started to dance. By the middle of the song the children had all found each other, and were getting down on the slippery floor of the flourescent lit terminal, laughing and clapping, holding hands and spinning around. For a moment everyone was smiling, happy, and free. It was disco's revenge, right there at gate 67A of Terminal 3.

With this in mind, I made a choice. If I could travel back in time would I go to Studio 54 - where the silver glitter and fabulous fame of Andy Warhol's 15 minutes reighned supreme and no one remembered what song was playing? Or would I go back to the Paradise Garage and get down with a lower east side which was bursting at the seams to Larry Levan's long, protracted, and amazing musical mosaics? To me it was a no brainer... Make mine Paradise.

So I dug for b sides, re edits, deep cuts, and just enough cheese to express myself freely, and that's what I delivered. I couldn't stop grinning, dancing, or laughing. It was a wonderful interruption to a serious theme I've been working on. I hope you died right along side me, and journeyed with my Boss DD-20 all he way to disco heaven.

Sunday night's transmission, the third in a four part series of ________ with a _______, meant as love letters to the past, sweet whispers to a state of being which is at once impossibly past, and somehow ever present and a constant influence in this moment. boy with a gun was a most personal inroad back to sleeping outside, fucking a cop, leaving home, and making a different choice. I undertook a dangerous prospect of holding a sweet boy's face in my warm and grown up hands and began to sing.

Personally, I think I bit off a little bit more than I was prepared to chew. I could do a four month series on the subject (don't worry I won't) but last sunday night will have to suffice for now. The past is a strange phenomena isn't it? It's most certainly not happening now, gone forever, and yet somehow the scars that never heal remain a contributing voice in this moment. How can I approach these experiences with love? How can I heal in a way which will celebrate my life, and liberate both the angry little boy in a leather jacket -- the boy with a gun -- and the radiant man he has become? Surely only a soft voice, love, and a willingness to let go of the stories I tell myself in order to somehow control and contain the anger, rage, grief, and secrets of things which are nearly unholdable, unapproachable, and gone.

As I continue forward into this momenet, love radiates all around me in the most glorious way. I had no idea that such friendship, love, tenderness, and honesty would guide me toward these avenues of the past again. I had no idea I would be asked to open my heart even wider, to love and to forgive even more. Sometimes it hurts so badly I have no idea what will become of me. Most of the time I am so free, so deeply and completely happy, so free.

Thank you for sharing this experience with me -- at least as an artist -- journeys to the light, from such deep darkness, and beautiful, radiant love. It means the whole wide world to me. Thank you for showing me with your sweet love, your tender ears, and your dancing feet that I am, and have never been, alone.

How can I heal in a way which will celebrate my life, and liberate both the angry little boy in a leather jacket — the boy with a gun — and the radiant man he has become?

Thank you for sharing this experience with me — at least as an artist — journeys to the light, from such deep darkness, and beautiful, radiant love. It means the whole wide world to me. Thank you for showing me with your sweet love, your tender ears, and your dancing feet that I am, and have never been, alone.
