Later on in the evening someone else I know stood up bravely before everyone. Even though the lights were dim, we could could see her clear as day. She’s changed, deeply changed. Her skin looks beautiful, her hair is long and thick, her eyes look at you, into you, whereas before they were always looking down. She was dressed simply, with a pretty scarf around her neck which she stroked softly as she spoke.
She went into detail to describe how she spent much of her life worried about being cool, and more or less operating on auto pilot. Recently a close friend of hers faded out of everyone’s view because of a secret they had been keeping from everyone. Sad as it was, this was perhaps the best thing that could have happened. It ignited a fire under her, and she has been honest, and gotten some things off her chest which she didn’t even know were drowning her. The difference is plain as day.
Before, she explained calmly, she spent a lot of time worrying about her boyfriend. Was he the right one? Was he good enough? What would she do if he cheated on her? What would she do if someone cooler came along? But now, she said looking up shyly, stroking her scarf, now if her boyfriend wants to leave it’s ok with her. It’s only making room for something better in her life.
We can not hold on to anything. It makes me cry. Yes, because it’s sad, but mostly because it’s so beautiful.
All we can do is love, and let go.
